Post Graduate Diploma in Theology
For Whom Is This Programme?
The Post-Graduates Diploma in Theology is a one-year programme focused on providing
candidates for ministry with the knowledge and skills required to perform their pastoral duties in a
professional, ethical and efficient manner. While the provision of theological and of pastoral skills is
the primary focus the programme, it is also designed to provide students with the skills and experience
in research methodology that is a pre-requirement for admission to Masters programmes in cognate
fields.
Up to now, in this Institute, the four years of theological training required for ordained ministry in the
Catholic Church was provided in a single four-year professional Bachelor of Theology. In
consultation with the stakeholders, it was agreed that, in changing times and, in the face of indications
that the number of people preparing for non-ordained ministry is increasing, the formal theological
training for ministry (ordained and non-ordained) would be offered in a broad-based BA in Theology.
It was further agreed that the specific professional training for ministry of students preparing for
ordained and non-ordained ministry would take place in this Post Graduate Diploma in Theology
which, as well as having components that were common to both kinds of ministry, would also have
specific requirements to meet the needs of each of these distinct kinds of ministry.
Programme Admission Criteria
The Post Graduate Diploma in Theology requires a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent in Theology or
some related field. Students who are preparing for ordained ministry in the Catholic Church must, in
addition a bachelor’s degree in theology, have completed at least two years of Philosophical studies.
The Exemptions Committee shall consider on a case-by-case basis the situation of those applicants
with equivalent or non-South African qualifications and offer further guidance in accordance with the
Institute’s RPL Policy and Procedures (PG 6.3, see also PG 4.2.2) and other applicable regulations
from relevant agencies of State as these relate specifically to Higher Education.
Programme Duration
Under normal circumstances the Post Graduate Diploma Theology requires one year of full-time study.
Students who wish to study on a part-time basis are also accommodated. Prior to admission to this
programme, candidates will be assessed by an admissions panel. Depending on the outcome of this
assessment, candidates may be asked to undertake a reading schedule and/or to follow some extra
modules prior to admission.
