The ceremony was facilitated by the Academic Dean, Fr. Patrick Aleke SPS Ph.D, while the Grand Chancellor, Rt Rev Dr Neil A. Frank OMI, officially declared the graduation ceremony open. Opening remarks were delivered by Prof. Paul Decock OMI on behalf of the President of the Institute, Very Rev Fr. Joseph Phiri OMI, who was unable to attend due to family commitments in Zambia.
In his message, Fr. Phiri described graduation as a moment of gratitude, achievement, and hope. He commended the graduates for their dedication and perseverance and reminded them that their formation in philosophy, theology, and development studies carries a responsibility to serve both the Church and society. He encouraged them to uphold the values of integrity, justice, humility, service, and commitment to truth in their future endeavours.
The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Nhlanhla Mkhize Ph.D, who challenged graduates to view education not merely as a personal accomplishment but as a means of contributing to the transformation of society. Drawing on African traditions of dialogue and community, he emphasized the values of participation, mutual understanding, and Ubuntu. He encouraged graduates to use their knowledge responsibly, embrace diversity, and contribute towards building a more just and inclusive society.
A significant moment of the ceremony was the conferral of qualifications and presentation of graduates, led by Fr. Jones Kawisha M.Afr. Ph.D., Head of the Department of Theology, and Br. Tendai Gandazara CMM, Head of the Department of Philosophy. This marked the formal recognition of the graduates’ academic achievements and successful completion of their studies.
The celebration was enriched by musical performances from the SJTI Choir, accompanied by the vibrant sounds of the SJTI Marimba Band, which added joy and dignity to the occasion.
On behalf of the graduating class of 2025, Br. Igilima Toussaint Mukumo M.Afr. delivered the vote of thanks. He expressed gratitude to God, the Institute’s leadership, lecturers, administrative staff, families, sponsors, and friends whose support contributed to the graduates’ success. He reminded fellow graduates that their achievements were not merely symbols of personal success but a call to service and responsibility. Special recognition was given to Bheki Henry Zuma, whose long academic journey exemplified perseverance, determination, and commitment to completing his studies. The 21st Graduation Ceremony was a celebration of academic achievement, personal growth, and formation for service. It reaffirmed SJTI’s mission of preparing graduates who are equipped to contribute meaningfully to the Church, their communities, and society at large.
