Students presented well-researched arguments from differing perspectives, drawing on theological tradition, Scripture, social teaching, and contemporary realities. The panels comprised of both Philosphy a nd Theology Students. On one hand, proponents of political involvement emphasized the Christian call to justice, the common good, and responsible citizenship, arguing that faith cannot be detached from the social and political conditions that shape human dignity. On the other hand, opposing views cautioned against the risks of politicizing faith, highlighting the importance of maintaining the Church’s prophetic distance and moral independence from partisan interests.

What made the debate particularly valuable was not the search for a single “correct” answer, but the quality of reasoning, listening, and critical reflection demonstrated by participants. Such debates cultivate intellectual maturity, encourage respectful disagreement, and help students navigate complex ethical questions with nuance rather than ideology.

The Church Alive Debate continues to play an important role in theological formation at SJTI. By engaging real-world issues in a structured and scholarly manner, it prepares students to think critically, speak responsibly, and engage society with both conviction and humility.
