The core mission of the department is supply academic formation for candidates for the Roman Catholic Priesthood.

As institution, Saint Joseph’s has a 60 year record of such formation and has made a significant contribution to the life of the Catholic Church in Southern Africa in particular and in Africa as a whole. Since 1994 SJTI has had a more pan-african and international student profile and now continues its contribution well beyond the continent of Africa.

The theology department offers two qualifications, a Bachelor of Arts in Theology B.A.(Theol) and a Bachelor of Theology B.Th.

The B.A.(Theol)

This is a six semester qualification and requires that the student achieve at least 433 credits. The degree cannot be completed in less than six semesters (recognition of prior learning notwithstanding).

SJTI’s B.A.(Theol) programme aims to supply excellence in academic formation in specificially Catholic Theology. The outcomes of the programme are as follows:

  1. A thorough understanding of Christian Roman Catholic Theology.
  2. A thorough understanding of the principles and theory of theological hermeneutics and the ability to apply such principles in new and unpredictable situations.
  3. A thorough understanding of the principles of interpretation of Scripture, and the ability to apply such principles in a variety of ways in a variety of media.
  4. Understanding of the unique nature and functioning of the church.
  5. Understanding the role of ministry in the Christian community.
  6. Understanding of Christian liturgy as found in the Roman Catholic Church.

The qualification is intended for all who need a knoweldge of Christian and Catholic theology and who are not required to qualify for priestly ministry in the Roman Catholic Church.

Other faith communities are free to recognize this qualification within their own ministerial structures.

Specializations such as Scripture, Moral Theology, Church History, Liturgy and Pastoral Administration are possible within the scope of this qualification. Students may then equip themselves for various positions of leadership and service not requiring presbyteral ordination.

Display B.A.(Theol) Curriculum

The B.Th.

This qualification fulfills all the academic requirements for presbyteral ordination within the Roman Catholic Church. It is an eight semester qualification and is equivalent to other professional bachelor degrees in the South African civil academic system. An overall mark of more than 60% will qualify the holder to apply for admission into Master’s programmes in the South African academic system.

To qualify the student must achieve at least 605 credits. The outcomes of the programme are as follows:

  1. A thorough understanding of Christian Roman Catholic Theology.
  2. A thorough understanding of the principles and theory of theological hermeneutics and the ability to apply such principles in new and unpredictable situations.
  3. A thorough understanding of the principles of interpretation of Scripture, and the ability to apply such principles in a variety of ways in a variety of media.
  4. Understanding of the unique nature and functioning of the church.
  5. Understanding of the unique context of pastoral ministry.
  6. Understanding the role of ministry in the Christian community.
  7. Understanding of Christian liturgy as found in the Roman Catholic Church.
  8. The acquisition of skills for the communication of the Gospel.
  9. Understanding of Canon Law which will enable the student to function within various juridical bodies of the Roman Catholic Church if called upon to do so.
